Shri Mataji spoke about the Egyptian Sphinx in several talks, Shri Mataji made the point about how the symbolic knowledge behind it was misunderstood or reversed over time, for anti truth reasons, as usual those that control the dialogue control the people. Other  than the symbolism Shri Mataji spoke about, Egyption scholas described the lion headed God as having these qualities – The primary lion-headed god in ancient Egyptian mythology is Maahes, revered as a fierce deity of war, protection, and weather. He was often depicted with the head of a lion, symbolizing strength and ferocity, and was closely associated with the goddess Sekhmet and Bastet

What she said in essence:

  • The Sphinx represents a symbolic combination of human evolution and animal instinct.

  • In Sahaja Yoga, the human head represents awareness, discretion, and evolution.

  • The lion represents power, dignity, and leadership (connected to the stomach area where in the yoga tradition the stomach is referred to as the Nabhi chakra and contains the Guru principle).

Shri Mataji said that the ancient knowledge originally portrayed the head as Lions and the body of a man—a symbol of evolved awareness governing strength and instinct.
But in the Egyptian Sphinx, the lion is the body and the human is the head, which she said was incorrect.

Shri Mataji referred to this reversal as a compromise or misunderstanding of the original spiritual meaning.

Her key point was:

The human awareness must guide power, not the other way around.
When power guides awareness, it becomes destructive.

So in her explanation:

Correct Symbol Meaning
Human body, Lions head Evolved awareness leading strength and instinct. (Balanced being)
Incorrect/Reversed Symbol Meaning

This is consistent with her broader teaching on the need for the Spirit (awareness) to rule over ego and conditionings (animal or reactive impulses).
