Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi – A Life of Spiritual Awakening and Global Transformation

Early Life and Spiritual Foundations
Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi was born on 21 March 1923 in Chhindwara, India, into a remarkable family devoted to truth, justice, and the upliftment of humanity. From childhood she displayed an extraordinary awareness of the subtle system, meditation, and the inner workings of human consciousness.
Her parents were pioneers in their own right:
- Prasad Rao Salve, her father, was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and later a member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted India’s Constitution.
- Cornelia Salve, her mother, was the first woman in India to receive an Honours Degree in Mathematics.
Even as a child, Shri Mataji radiated compassion, inner silence, and a deep understanding of spirituality that would later transform millions.
Shri Mataji and India’s Fight for Independence
During her youth, Shri Mataji became actively involved in India’s struggle for independence. She lived for a time in Mahatma Gandhi’s ashram, where she absorbed his principles of non‑violence, moral courage, and self‑discipline.
She participated in the freedom movement with clarity and fearlessness, driven by a profound desire to see India not only politically free, but spiritually awakened.
Her family’s sacrifices and her own involvement shaped her lifelong mission: to help humanity achieve inner freedom through Self‑Realisation.
The Great Spiritual Experience – Raising Her Own Kundalini
On 5 May 1970, on the seashore at Nargol, India, Shri Mataji entered a profound state of meditation that changed the course of human spiritual evolution.
She witnessed the entire mechanism of the Kundalini and the subtle system within human beings. She later described the experience as:
- “Like metal in a furnace, glowing with different colours.”
- The Kundalini rising with tremendous force and purity.
- A moment so powerful that she said she was “stupified” by its beauty.
In that moment, she raised her own Kundalini, opening the gateway for all human beings to receive Self‑Realisation effortlessly. This was the birth of a new spiritual possibility for the world.
The Birth of Sahaja Yoga
After her experience in 1970, Shri Mataji began teaching a simple, natural method of meditation called Sahaja Yoga — meaning “born with you” or “spontaneous union”.
Her discovery made it possible for ordinary people to feel:
- The cool breeze of the Kundalini, can be felt above the head when a few strands of the Kundalini energy passes through the Sahastrara Chakra at point of the head which was the soft spot when we were babies.
- The awakening of the Spirit, takes place as the Kundalini energy which is feminine joins with the ‘Spirit’ in the Heart Chakra, when these two forces move to the fontanelle bone at the top of the head they give us a ‘feeling of peace’ and a ‘feeling of true joy’ this Joy is not the temporary feeling that you may have from bungee jumping or a shopping spree, some retail therapy or other activity, this feeling is what every saint and incarnation as spoken about the ‘inner peace’ a sense of reality and sense of inner joy a
- The cleansing of the chakras, takes place when the Kundalini comes into each Chakra and purifies it bit by bit.
- The state of thoughtless awareness is achieved when the Kundalini passes through the two hemisphere of the brain, left and right. The right side is all our current thinking and planning, the left side deals with our emotions and the past memories, if we can go beyond these two hemisphere we enter a state beyond thinking of the past and the future, this state is a state of thoughtless awareness’
- The joy of inner silence
Shri Mataji taught these principles
- The Kundalini is a motherly, nurturing energy within every person.
- Self‑Realisation is a living experience, not a belief.
- The cool breeze is the actual vibration of the Spirit.
- Meditation should be effortless and joyful.
- Real transformation comes from inner silence, not rituals.
Marriage to Sir C.P. Srivastava
In 1947, Shri Mataji married Sir Chandrika Prasad Srivastava, one of India’s most respected civil servants. Sir C.P. later became the Secretary‑General of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO), where he was knighted for his global service.
Their marriage was a partnership of deep respect, love, and shared purpose. Sir C.P. often said that Shri Mataji was the guiding force behind his integrity, strength, and success.

St the time of writing (2026) for more than 56 years, Shri Mataji travelled the world teaching Sahaja Yoga free of charge, establishing meditation centres in over 100 countries.

Every human being has the right to feel their own Spirit.
